Set – mnemonic device, “Writing is as easy as A, B, C, D, E, F, G!”
A – Address your Audience
B – Begin immediately with Pre-Writing Strategies! Identify prompt writing type response to use (Narrative, Expository, or Persuasive). Place main word from prompt in center of a page and create a writing web. When you have developed a writing web begin your response by writing on every other line to allow room later for content and conventions’ edits. DO NOT USE “Hello, my name is ____ and I am going to tell you about…” Early Childhood students may begin by drawing a picture and responding orally about the story it tells. The teacher should record student responses in writing or video.
C – Create - …Characters in a Narrative, …a statement of support for an opinion in Persuasive, …a pattern in nature or sequence of steps in Expository
D – Descriptions, Details, Dialogue - Details which address VOICE
E – Edit for CONTENT (beginning, middle & end), then, Edit for CONVENTIONS
F. - Final Draft in your most Legible handwriting
G – Go over one last time from A to G and Give it a GREAT TITLE!
Students learn the mnemonic and prompt samples are used to identify audience, type of writing response needed. Students select a prompt and go through the writing process. Self editing and peer edits are used.
This mnemonic device is used by the teacher to create a grading rubric.
